MEETING OF EXECUTIVE,

A meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury War Relief Society! was held in the secretary’s onice yesiOi-' day. Present: Messrs if. J. Ro'lleston (chairman; E. j v . Gillingmun, w. Orbeli, U. The Secretary stated that Mr E. It. Guinness had represented trie Society at the opening, and reported that the> Chairman spoke of the great assistance! South Canterbury had given in osliib-l lishing the Home, and apologised for the oversight by which the Executive 1 was not invited to attend the opening of the Home. Mr Guinness also re-, ported that the Home filled a muelifelfc want. Several South Canterbury: soldiers were accomodated there and j were receiving every attention. | Temuka branch advised that Mr E.! G. Scrimshaw had been elected to the Branch Committee in place of Mr F. C. Davies, who had loft Temuka.

The Geraldine branch suggested that it was inadvisable for public appeals to be made for the benefit of returned soldiers without the consent and approval of the Executive.

It was pointed out that the Executive is always prepared to deal with deserving cases of returned soldiers; but they had no jurisdiction or control over the actions of the public in such a. matter. The Geraldine branch also suggested that members should be paid travelling expenses when attending meetings.— it was decided that country members be paid 10s per day towards travelling expenses for each meeting they attend. Geraldine branch reported that it had dealt with two cases, and Mackenzie branch that it had given assistance in one case. Temuka and Waimate branches forwarded statements of accounts paid during the last two months. The Timuru branch Claims and Loans Committee reported that of 12 applications for loans 9 were declined, 2of £3OO and £IOO approved, and 1 held over. Fifteen lump-sum grants of from £1 to £l3 13s, amounting to £BS 13s, (were approved. Six weekly grants of from 10s to 40s per week for periods varying from one to three months were granted. Six applications for assistance were declined. Four weekly grants were reviewed. One was increased from 5s to 10s per week, one of 10s renewed, one was reduced from 20s to 10s per week, and one grant of 20s per week ■was cancelled.

A statement of all payments made during the last two months was presented and approved. The Treasurer submitted a statement of accounts to May 31 showing: Subscriptions promised £51,516, of ■ which £7O was unpaid; investments '£22,100, loans to soldiers £3722, payments for last two months £543. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting. J '~
