Mr W. 11. Ifould, chief librarian of the Sydney Public Library, and MrGeorge Robertson, of the firm of Angus and Robertson, publishers, of Australia, are at Dunedin. Mr Frank W. Coombes, one of the stipendiary stewards of the Australian Jockey Club, and some years ago sporting editor of the "New Zealand Times," arrived in Wellington on Monday from Sydney. He will spend about a month in the Dominion. A cable message last evening stated that Sir Eric Geddes has resigned from the House of Commons, being undesirous of a political career. Sir Eric Geddes was Coalition Unionist for Cambridge, and occupied several important positions in the War Ministry
At a special meeting of the Timaru South School Committee last evening Mr J. G. Johnston, F.R.S. headmaster at Washdyke, was appointed to the position of first assistant master. Mr Johnston holds an “A” grade certificate, and has served during his teaching career at Purakauiti, Tawanui, Otago, Mornington, Dunedin (five years second assistant), and two years at Washdyke. Mr Johnston was on active service during the war for about two years. The death occurred last week at Remuera, Auckland, of Mr James Campbell Gillies, who was for many years well known in musical circles in Timaru. He was one of the founders of the South Canterbury Musical Society, and was president of that and also of the Dunedin Society. Since taking up his residence in Auckland about eighteen months ago he held the office of president of the Auckland Society of Musicians. Mr Gillies had been in bad health for some time.
