QUESTION OF TAXES
A protest against any attempt to impose rates on denominational school: was made by a depniation representing the: Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, and Anglican Churches, which waited on the conference of the Municipal Associations of New Zealand ar- Wei lingten on Wednesday. Dr. Gibb, Father Connell and Mi T. .1. McGraih wore the speakers. Tic- president of the Conference (Air R, A. Wright. M.P.) said the delegates bad every sympathy with the churches in their work, ’out he desired to point mt that local bodies bad found that there bad V-en a gradual enroachment m revenue that should be derived from rates. Later Air Flosher (Christchurch) noved that the Rating Aet should be
amended to provide that the properties exempted from rating should be exempted from the general rato only, and should pay all other rates the proposed amendment not to apply to properties used exclusively for religious worship. Mr Flesher thought that churdb hostel and boarding houses in connection with a denominational institute should pay their fair share towards lighting and water rates.
