TRAIN MISHAP.
NORTH ISLAND TRUNK. ENGINE BURIED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, August .31 A mishap occurred to the tram which left Thorndon at 5.10 last night Hu Johnsotiville. Half-wav between Xu am and' Khamiallah, a landslide of considerable magnitude fell oil the leading engine of the train which was boing towed up hill l>y two engines. The leading engine was buried in soggy earth, softened by heavy rains, to tiio smokebox, and its bogey derailed. Fortunately neither engine-driver nor fireman was injured. A wreckage- gang was despatched immedia teiy. Passengers by the expresses from Napier and New Plymouth were transhipped at the slip, with luggage and brought on to Thorndon by special . trains'. j Both trains wore about two hours late arriving. The wreckage gang succeeded in extricating the buried engine, which, is virtually undamaged. The slip was cleared for the passing trains before midnight.
