MEETING OF TEMUKA COMMITTEE
A mooting of the Temuka. "War Memorial Committee was held last Frida.v evening. Present: tJi e Mayor (Mi- T. Gunnion), Messrs J. ']'. Smart, -T. Sheen, L. G. and E. G. Scrimshaw-, J. Lee, George Haueox, \V. F. Evans, Adams, Rev. A. H. I'vorris, Dr. Hastings, and the secretary (Mr E. 13. Cooper). Apologies were received from Mr and Mrs Bates.
j The Mayor said that lie. had thought that the response to the appeal would have boon quicker and larger. Just over half the ■amount required, had been collected, and it was lor the n oeting to say whether a smaller memorial of | the same design .should be selected. He was quite willing tu spend a week in : making a, personal appeal, and it was i discouraging to tliiuk that in such a | wealthy district only £6<H> had been colI leeted in lour weeks. Ho had sincerely | thought tlilit the money would have • been got without any trouble.
Mr P.. M. Siovwright (Clandoboyc) wrote stating that he would not bo able to attend meetings in Temuka., hut if there was anything he could do in. the Claudcboyc district lie would be glad to assist.
A letter was road from Mr AY. S. Aspinall regarding a. sum of £22 collected for an Anzae Poll of Honour. He and his co-trustees were willing to hand it to the Memorial Committee, together with a frftfthcr sum nf i's, on condition that a. separate tablet for tho Anzacs be placed on the public memorial.
.Dr. .Hastings thought the requestshould be granted, while Mr Evans thought that no differentiation t-hould be made, j Mr Smart remarked that the Anzacs' names would be inscribed in any case, and lie suggested asking Messrs Aspinall and Oldlield to reconsider their offer. " Dr. Hastings said that as the money ivns collected for the purpose stated he did not think these gentlemen could depart from it. It was finally decided that a. small sub-committee wait on Messrs Aspinall and Oldlield and ask them to reconsider their offer.
The question of raising £6OO to bring the fund up to the amount required was then discussed.
Mr Sheen thought that if the oi'.tlying districts were, properly canvassed the money would he forthcoming within a week. Others expressed confidence in a. personal canvass, and on the notion of Dr. Hastings the following committees were appointed, with power to add to their number: —Country: The Mayor, Pev. A. H. Norris, Messrs 1). O'Connor and J. T. Smart; town: Messrs J. Lee, T. Sheen, E. G. Scrimshaw, and A. E. Smith. The Rev. A. H. Norris gave notice that he would move a resolution at a public meeting to be held on Monday, September 13—that the resolution passed authorising the purchase, of an obelisk of polished granite bo amended to read "of dressed but not polished granite." The meeting of the Canvass Committee was held subsequently, and complete arrangements'were made to begin the work on Monday morning. Several owners have placed cars at the disposal of the canvassers, who have every 'Confidence that a liberal response will bo made to their appeal.
