Messrs Jesse South, 31. O'Connor, W. Moore, G. Cross, and P. Elivortliy spoke ou similar Jiues, Mr South and Mr Ehvorthy laying stress on ths fairness with which Mr Pearson ,iad nlioted space.

Mr James Median snid lhat Mr Pearson had met all difficulties m the way of allocation of space, labour troubles, and shortage ot shipping in a manner which spoke volumes 'for his business capabilities.

Mln Thomson then asked Mr Pearson's acceptance of a htfndsome gold watch and chain for himself unci a purse of sovereigns for Mrs Pearson. The watch bore a monogram artistically engraved on the front, a suitable inscription inside, and round the outside was engraved the quotation from Burns. "A »imm o' independent mind is king o' men for a' that/'" The largo company thereupon enthusiastically pledged '.\Jr Pearson's health, to tho singing ot •'For lie's a jolly good fellow."

When he joined the company's service about' 22 years ago Mr Waymouth, then manager, told him that- the company's idea was to give their clients a straight deal,, and t-h:s had been bis ond?avour throughout his ejiu'.ection with the company. He touk that opportunity of referring to tho support ho had at all times received from tiio local members of the company's staff. He was sure that no manager could have a, more loyal and wiiole-hcarted band ot' fellow-workers. (Applause;. Practically all the employees had bren in the company's service for many -sears, d fact, which was 'as banoficial to the company as it was to the clients. (Hear, hoar). In -conclusion, Mr Pearson, on behalf of Mrs Pearson and himself, thanked tho .subscribers for their great kindness and high appreciation of his services.

On the motion of "Mr J. Meehnn ahearty vote of thanks- was -passed to the chairman, and this concluded the meeting.
