SHELL SHOCK

The House of' Lords has approved the appointment iof a Departmental Committee to investigate the effects or different kinds of shellaliock. The inquiry will include cases where sentence of death had been inflicted' 7 oil charges of cowardice. Speakers urged the necessity of placing those suffering from shellskock for a : sufficient time, -under medical observation to ascertain whether -their 'mental balance yras- affected. Lordr Peel replying, saicl the "War Office would be glad to accept a mixed Committee including a lawyer, and perhaps soldiers. Extreme care had. however, always to bo exercised at courts-martial ' where shiellshock cases were involved. A medical • officer was always included if there was any. suggestion of mental or nervous disorder, but -many nervous and mental conditions encountered were entirely new-to medical officers.
Lord Peel, TJnider-Secretar.v for AVar, sneaking in the House of Lords, said that the death sentences passed durinar the whole war time numbered, in all theatres, 3076 offieers and men. huit only 343 were earned out. All the latter were confirmed before execution by the Commander-in-Chief.
