THE MEN OF THE RENOWN.
,Tliere is no cloubt that the people oi' South Canterbury will be delighted if the request which has been made for a detachment of the ; biuejackets, marines, and band of the Renown to spend a tew hours in Timaru can be complied: with, The '. short time, limited to half an hour, which the Prince can spend in Timaru, with the fact that he will be only seen at other South Canterbury stations where his train will stop, makes a strong* plea in support of the request'- The. Renown was built too late to have any part in the ffreat naval actions of the war. Slie was a unit in the batfcle-cruiser fleet during the l&st two years of it, when the Battle ox Jutland had been fought, and the' German Navy was not looking- tor any more battles. She was one of the guards' of the surrendered German Fleet, she totted, about the Atlantic while 834 was "doing- stunts," and she took the, Prince' of Wales to Canada .before starting- on her present trip. Hers has been largely a peace'history. But the record of the ( officers of the Renown is an epitome of the whole naval war. The North Sea (Ju° land and Zeebrngge), th© Darfe Cameroons, Africa, Falkland Islands, Russia—all are included in it dl "clcomin«- a detachment •o4 the Renowns crew South Canterbury will be welcoming- a . trlection of the men who bore their part, upon many waters, in the war, and without whom it coujr] never have been won. We shall do our best to _ make their visit a pleasant -one if they can spend five hours in Timaru.
