HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETINGS. FAIRLIE, Ihere was only a moderate attendance, and Bev. A. C. W. Standago was voted, to the chair. In opening the meeting the chairman welcomed, on behalf of tiie households, Mr J. E. "Wilson, the new headmaster! and wished him a pleasant and successful stay at Fairlie School. The chairman, of the retiring committee (Mr C. J. Talbot) presented the annual balance sheet and report. The former showed thart the committee commenced the year witha credit balance of £SS 6s 6d, and ended' the period with' a, balance in, hand of £6 9s. Eeceipts had totalled £136 6s 6d, of .which. £67 had been contributed local!v., The expenditure totalled £lB7 2s- including £75 odd for improvements to buildings and school grounds. The annual report gave details of changes in the committee, and praised the work 0 f the lady member, Mrs' Walter Black. The average attendance had again reached 200, and if this could he maintained to the end of the year an additional master could be secured. A school like Fairlie should have more than one master, but the Board said the available salary would not attract a sufficiently experienced man; if the ate tendance kept np and the school rose te the next grade an assistant master would be advertised for. Important changes which had occurred in the staff were detailed, and the work of the late headmaster (Mr Piper), who had been appointed an inspector, was eulogised. The new master (Mr J. E.. Wilson) gave every promise of being a worthy successor of Mr Piper. The school was still ■ overcrowded, find the Parish Hall had j to be utilised for the overflow. The I Board decided_ in July last to enlarge! the school building!, but nothing had I been done yet. _ A district high school' was much required for Fairlie district,' but a sufficient number of pupils was ] not available to satisfy the Department. I Amongst the improvements made the heating system had been made more efficient. The system of giving hot drinks to children for their lunch had been continued. Thanks were accorded to those who gave milk and other requisites. The report appealed to parents to assist the committee "financially, the incidental grant froni the Board being quite inadequate to requirements. The report and balance sheet were adopted. A discussion took place on- the special need of Pairlie for a District High School, owing to its isolated situation, and it was resolved that the Minister and the Board be urged to take the special circumstances of Fairlie into consideration. A vote of thanks was passed to the headmaster "and staff, and was acknowledged by Mr AVilson. Nine nominations were made for the committee, and the following "ere elected: —Mrs Black, Messrs Talbot. Lack, Ormandy, Pickering, Surridge (all re-elected), and Staples. At a. subsequent meeting of the committee Mr C. J. Talbot was re-elected chairman and Mr J. B. Lack secretary. It was decided to meet on the first Monday evening in each month. The Board forwarded a. list of seven applicants for the vacancy on the staff caused by the resignation of Miss Cor--coran, and the committee approved of the Board's choice of candidate. Am application from the Alpine Hookey Club for the nse of the school grounds on Saturday afternoons for practice play was declined with, regret. It was decided to hold a. monster dance in aid of the school funds on. Mayas, in the Fairlie Public Hall. The charges were fixed at 2s 6& and Is 6d, and it was decided to get tickets printed at o nce and. to make arrangements for music and refreshments forthwith.
'ALBTJEY. At the annual meeting of hohseholders at Albury there was an attendance of eighteen. Mr F. C. Hogg presided, and submitted a. lengthy report of the year s work The balance sheet showed a credit balance of about £l4. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing committee. Six nominations were received for the new committee, and the fottowing were elected:—Messrs F. C. Hogg (chairman). Besley, Donaldson, Eoss, land Eev. Hall (secretary)..
JSALING. At the householders meeting there was a small attendance, over which Mr Wallace presided. In giving qut the annual report, lie made flattering reference to the capabilities of Miss Knox, the teacher, and the splendid way she had conducted the school, diirin<>- the seven years She has been in charge. There were only four members "elected to the committee —Messrs B. Withell, J- Good, Austen, and A. Wallace. The other member will be selected by the Board, to whom some names have been submitted.
SEADOWN. A' fair number attended the householders' meeting. The accounts showed 1 a good credit balance. The new committee? are: Messrs A.berley, Brosnahan, Campbell, Cain, and Topham. Mr Aberley was elected chairman and Mr Topham secretary. It was decided that the I term holidays.be taken now.
