Y.M.C.A.

+ THE SWIMMING CLUB. A meeting of the executive ,of the I Y.M.CA. Swimming Club was held on.] Wednesday evening, when, a general | discussion took place as to the position' of their request to the Timaru Borough Council for help towards forming a I club. The general feeling expressed was that, failing the erection of a special room, which the Council had evidently \ found just now to be impossible, the motion proposed by Councillor Boyle, approving of the formation of the club, granting season tickets at half ratesi and giving the use of the Bay Pavilion to the club on one night of the week for lectures etc., when it was not otherwise engnged, would be sufficient help to place the club in a sound position. It was pointed out that the club had in its ranks nearly half the members of the old Life-Saving Club, and as many of the members of the club are natatorial experts, and used the rubble wall on account of the deeper woter for high diving, and consequently did not patronise the dressing sheds now, that the Bay finance would "oe helped by the establishment of "the club, as three men would then use the dressing sheds and would pay the rate arranged by the j Council, instead of, as formerly, taking free bathing from the mole. It- was further remarked that, leaving the deep water along the rocks called for a certain amount of sacrifice, but the members would be amply repaid by the additional security winch their presence would give to bathers, and, from a Timaru advancement point of view the extra attraction which lifesaving 'and reel work competitions will add to the sands. _ ,«,,,„ The secretary ssffd that the Club s offer to assist in the Council in any way desired on the Bay had been by some people thought to be a request asking for control of the Bay. ISothing could be further from the Club's contentions. It simply wished, as stated in their letter, to do anything in their power desired by the Council.
