BARBAROUS warfare. By Electric.-Telegraph—CopyrighT. Australian and JN.Z- Cable,Assn. LONDON, July 29. Correspondents with General Deniken's armies state that a period of inactivity is essential tor reorganisation. They remain optimistic, but state that it is the cruellest type of warfare, accompanied by terrible atrocities. The Bolsheviks lighted inflammable oil in the ears of victims, hammered nails in tlie soles of their ieet- and- put swarms' of ants into open wounds. Such are amongst the misdeeds in South' Russia, where many; women'and girls were shot for defending- their honour. - SITUATION' IN SIBERIA. . BOLSHEVIKS PRESSING ON. , (From, Australian Files.") LONDON. July 6 Mi- Wilton, correspondent of "Tlie Times" in Siberia, describing his visit to the" south wing 'of tlie Siberian army, says that the situatiqn is acute. The Reds arc- pressing on, and' are cutting off Perm. . Tho sjfirit of tlie white troops' is magnificent, but they" are_ much exhausted by casualties and iyplius. The railways are congested;-and the High Command is reckless and incompetent. The countryside is little disposed to accept Bolshevism, ' demanding the mobilisation cf tho o!der~ jncn i whilst women and children are moving eastward, leaving their homes .and harvest to the enemy, rather" than undergo" Bolshevik rule. At all the wayside stations the correspondent saw motley.} ill-clad assemblies of rusttie refugees. , British gunboats have been in action for a month. The Reds are far more heavily armed, but they ventured * to' engage in ■op'm battle only once, when they received. Mich punishment thai; they haye since adopted a passive role. Tho British boats were much knock.ed about and' it' is marvellous how they escaped' destruction. . .'■ , . ( • _ .
