Fourteen whites and eight negroes were killed and about 500 were injured in the race riots at Chicago. Throughout Monday night mobs controlled the streets, and there was wild fighting and shooting. The trouble arose out of an attempt to compel negroes to occupy their own bathing beaches.

The casualties total fiveTtundred injured and twenty-six dead. Of the latter sixteen are whites. The situation is aggravated by a strike of tramwaymeu which tied up the city's transportation system. Altogether fifteen thousand employees are out.
