SIMPLIFIED SPELLING FOB THE 1 BABIES. _ ■■.-. ... ; "Wun a psni, too a peni, Hot kros bunz! By dliem for eur' da.ut-erz, By dliem for ©ur sunz._ Wun a peni, too a peni, Hot kros bunz This is not an attempt to reproduce tho language of a drill sergeant. Nor is ifc Esperanto or Danish, although it looks very much like it. It is a nursery rhyme a-t to baby language by the British Simplified Spelling Society. Professor Skeat . the first president of the society, propounded the theory that in the interests of etymology we ought to spell as we pronounce. The idea of the society is that- if the modern baby is taught to read rhymes and stoi-tes in simplified spelling its ■pro-ti'unciation is greatly improved, and it gets a better hold on the' conventional spelling as it grows up. ' Hence tho society has just published a new book, VJinglz and S'tcriz," from which the above rhyme is extracted, with the object of teaching the baby to talk correctly. Here a-re a few- gems from 'tlhe baby's vocabulary Boooher. Poosikat. Fyreplais. Poestmanz Nok. Kwy-et-lli. Surpryzd. Mudlher. , Roeziz. ''it js interesting to note," says Miss Irene Montague, the secretary, "anat } if no tramsitaan from simplified spelling to ordinary spei|un@ were necessary thwoiik of nineteen months could be done in ten. Even with the transition, which, is made Without difficulty, five months' tim-a could be savw'd out- of nineteen months." Ttie new language is suitable for all babies, whether, born in S'.tUiiland or in Park-lane. The next step of tlhe society ought to be to publish an etymological guide to moth si s on how to talk to their babies. MOEE EAIENSFATHER.
A sixth volume of the famous "Fragments" series of cartoons issued by the "Bystander," gives Captain Bruce. Bairnsfather new, material for his pen, introducing "Old Bill" and his admirers to the "Sammies'" army and the "corrugated" Italian front. The Italian pictures art* particularly amusing, and the artist has done few things better than the double page drawing, which shows an embarrassed "Old Bill" feted in France as one of the heroes of the war. Only two other humourists in the world i.o-day can vis with Captain Bairnsfather in world-wide popular appeal, and neither of the others wields the wen or pencil. Those who have enjoyed the earlier volumes cf "Fragments." —and who has not? — cannot afford .to miss his latest and nossiblv concluding number. Mr. A. .T. Fvfe (for Messrs Wliitcombe and Tombs). local agent..
