STRANGE EXPLOSION

:■;.,:' "GEEYMOUTH, May 29. About 2 o'clock this- morning the residents of Greymouth were awakened by a terrific explosion, which proved to have been one of the most dastardly deeds recorded in tlie Dominion for many years.
A high explosive was placed in the house of Senior Sergeant Simpson, of the Police Force, and the house now resembles a building that had- been bombed.
Sergeant Simpson says that he was awakened by the explosion, the swaying building and falling glass. He found the kitchen in a state of chaos, the walls shattered, solid shelves torn out of position and the windows blown clean out. .
Simpson and' an infant were sleeping in a room adjoining,:but were saved the force of the explosion by a cupboard m the kitchen-bedroom wall. w A charge had evidently been placed m the angle formed by the kitchen chimney and the wall. The _high explosive used shattered a .bench and sink and splintered the chimney. The charge was fired by a time fuse. an d a large charge was, used. :%ae inmates escaped injury, but Mrs bimpson is suffering from shock.
