SCHOOL COMMITTEES
' TIMAKU .MAIN. A meeting of the TimarufMain School Committee was held last, evening. Present—Messrs J. E. Chiles (eiiairman), A.. Stead, W. Anderson, A. E. Boys, C. J. Holdgate, W. J. Rogers, J. "W. Preen, and J. iyeay. A letter from the Education Board was received appointing Miss J. J. Miller as assistant mistress at the Main School.
■ Mr J..W. Preen resigned the position of treasurer owing to want of time. — The resignation was. accepted with regret, and Mr Rogers was appointed to the position.The secretary of the Children's Peace Celebrations Sub-committee (Mr W. G. Irwin) wrote asking for the co-opera-tion of the headmaster and headmistress, and also Mr J. Donohue representing the Schools' Sports Committee.—This was agreed to, and also to ask the other teachers to assist. A letter from the' Education Board with regard to the supply of coal for the school was received. The Board stated- that they had interviewed- the. coal trade on the matter, and thatschools were now ow the "essential"'" list: The coal trade could not, howallow the Board to purchase coal for distribution to schools, so • thai schools will have to continue securing coal : from their respective dealers. / • The headmaster reported that the; attendances at the two schools had jbeen good end the roll numbers, were "steadily rising. Miss Rudge had taken up her duties as junior assistant on May 1. Certificates had been • received from the St.- John Ambulance Association for ■-services, rendered during the war. Nurse had visited the Schools frequently to arrange for medical attention being given to scholars requiring it. The headmaster hoped that, the. matter. of a war : memorial would be discussed shortly as four hundred ex-pupils had gone to the war, and of this number over sixty had made the supreme sacrifice. , The chairman said that as other schools, were considering the erection of war memorials they should make a start in doing something toward the erection of a suitable memorial.
Mr Stead thought'it would be wise to wait a while, as deaths were still occurring among the soldiers! Mr Anderson said he was in favour of calling; a meeting of householders to discuss the matter and raise funds. He sugested that the memorial he in the shape _ of' a rough stone cairn, with a sun dial and the names of the fallen ex-pupils inscribed on the sides. Mr Preen said it would be as well to have some definite plan to lay before the householders.
It was decided to hold a meeting of householders on 16th June to consider the matter.
Messrs Preen and Anderson reported having visited the schools, -where everything was running smoothly. • The grounds were in good order. Mr Anderson praised the headmaster and his staff for the way they carried out their difficult duties.
Accounts passed for payment amounted to £4l 17s. ■■■-•
It was agreed to ask the Education Board for permission to cut down some of the trees in the playground. Mr Anderson moved that the Main School caretaker's 'salary be increased to £lO2, and that'of the ianitrix of the West School to £36, as he did' not consider their • present salaries to l sufficient 1 in view of the-liigh ;.cost of living.—Mr Preen seconded themotion: The chairman said he would like, to see the salaries raised, and the'motion ;tos •Carried/hnanimbusly.
