The British fought sanguinary battles on the 18th and 19th of September, suffering and inflicting severe losses in assaults on tine dominating. and elaborately fortified heights of P Rid>re and Grand Couronne. These battles served th*'r object, which was to pin dovn the Bulgarian reserves so that Ihpy we-3 unavailable to oppose the'- preat Franco-Serbian attack which burst tlivough and loci to tho utter defeat; of the enemy. Tho despatch incidentally nisnt'oas that when the news of the nimhtice with Turkey was received Gcnsr-il Milne was actually on the river Maritzn, ready to occupy Adrianop'e, wlhile the First Hellenic Corps was escholoned between Kavalla and Drama, ready to narticipato in a general advance on Constantinople.
