THE LATE MAJOR ROGERS, D.S.O,
The following letter from Coll Sykea, N.Z.1 1 .A., may be of interest to tha many friends wno have expressed their sympatiiy on the death of Major Vic toRogurs, D.S.O.—
'■He was with me yesterday afternoon on a court martial, and left before me to go up to his Battery. Ho must liavo been caught in y. shell storm or tliio load, as the first wo knew was that he had been picked up and taken on to a dressing station, lio had been lilt on the head by a largo fragment of shell, and ilids pocket book, pay book letter and so on that ware in his breast pocket had' been riddled. Death was instantaneous.
"1 personally feel his loss more deeply than that of any of tiio officers under my command. He started with me in the Second Battery, and has been with me all tin-ought except for the Sommo, where ho was in t command of tho Eleventh Battery. I ani glad to say that though, lie was not serving under mo at tho time, I was instrumental in getting him recommended for tho D.S.O. tliat lie earned so well. My Headquarters were eloso to his Batterv or rather the remnant of it, for ho seldom had more than a gun or two i.n action, and had to ehnngo his por.i. ton frequently But yet he -was always ehwrful and hard at it. He was in (rall poli With mo, and tTioueh a subaltern commander) tho Fifth Batterv mere fnr a long time. He commanded tho sa.mp Battery at Messinos and Nieu nort. and at other plaeas. Ho d : d uniformly w°ll, was tW'"eo wou"ded, a»d was as aallnnt, nn offieer as T have evemet. Ho will be verv hard to ropla™. Tr. will bo ,Fomo consolation to vou to kn*w that a-Vl l,i, dutv eaMnntlv. and W fti|, Pnf i without knowine it a groat mercy these days." '
