AFTER-WAR PROBLEMS
ARRANGEMENTS AT HOME. Mr George Butler, of Pleasant Point, has received from a friend in Birmingham a long letter in which he describes what is being done at Home to deal with the employment of soldiers after 'the war. The writer says that a National Alliance of employers and employees has been formed to deal with this problem, to arrange for the re-distribu-tion of labour in general, and also to deal with any subsequent problem of unemployment or labour dislocation. It will have eommilttees of masters and men to deal witli all trade questions, to work together for mutual interests, :.nd abolish \g far as possible strikes rnd lock-outs. For years there were people at Home who had advocated this, but they did not think they would have lived to see its realisation. The inaugural meeting at which 2000 employers and employees were present, the writer says, was the first ho had ever been at. It' was thoroughly enthusnstio nnd there was ndt- a single disentient voice or vote. At this meeting was laid the foundation stone of unity between capital and labour. Other meetings are 'to follow in all parts of the country. In a reference to the war the writer says: "Germany squeals about peace: she funks at the fu'fure: but we are not going to bo tricked. No inconclusive poaee for us. We will win or die round the statue of liberty. But we will not die; we will live through it all, and open out a new earth for the nations.''
