After lipavy inland rains the Ashhurton, Orari,'and Opihi also discharge much ready-made sand and silt into the !«>a. The mouths of thp rivors named all lie north-east, of Dashinsr Rocks. Stormy seas f<rom due east strike the beach obliquely and probablv drive «ilt and sand down the southwest shore from the-river mouths on occasions when a. flood happens to be in •the rivers. Tb P ,+ii P<) rv that much of the sand in Hambnc Titw comes from the north-onsjt, either portly in suspension or-driven along; the shore, lias found no out«r>oken converts.
