Counsel for the defondants con-1 tended that the war regulations were ultra vnes, but the Magistrate, Mr Reed, I'onvicted, and discharged the defendants.
"THE PENSION LIABILITY.
From tho 'passing of the Pensions' Act up to March 31st, 4756 claims for pensions had been lodged By soldiers and 2098 by dependents. The numbers of claims' dealt with, tip to the end of last week-were 4617 and 2650 respectively. Of the 4677 soldier claimants 1003 were granted pensions, and 3194 temporary pensio"s, 439 soldiers' claims had been declined,. 7 adjourned and 34 are on hand. Pensions had been granted to 2075 dependents, air.d temporary pensions to 258, while 252 dependents' claims hwl been declined, 7 adjourned and 58 fto on hand. The annual va 1 -"© of the 1003 soiaiers' pensions is £53,037 average £52. The 437 wives' and widows' pensions (including 683 children's) have an animal value of £42,916, averaging £9B; while 1638 other dependents' pensions total '£47,872, average £29. ' The 3452 temporary pensions are at the aggregate rate of £198,320 .yearly, or an averaao of £57 per annul*. T he rn-o"d r-ctrf " e tho ™»n_ e'ons granted bo far is 6530, vilh a. 'to-ill annual value of £342,195. averaging £sl. Erom these however, have to be deducted in round ft'gnres 1300 pensioners who have gone off the roll for various reasons. These represent an anmial value of approximately £67,000 making the net 'liability of the State in round figures £275,003.
