NEW ZEALAND'S LOSSES
(Por Press Association.)
DUNEDLN, April 2.
Sir James Allen stated to-day that the Government is making every effort to maintain the best standard possible in ibe essential) oversea trade of New Zealand; indeed, Ithe question has obtained the consistent attention of the Administration and the Ministers at Home. .In view of recent direct effects of the enemy submarine campaign on New Zealand traders and also the announcment "as .to -the diversion of several vessels in the Australasian ■'service to the American trade, the Government immediately communicated with Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward, and a. cabled reply was received to-day, Mr Massey advising that a strong protest has been made to the Board of Control against the diversion of such vessels, and stating that he thought the Board was impressed, but he admitted the position was very difficult. Sir James Allen points out that the reason for the diversion is that ships can make two trips in the American trade against one to Australasia, and in view of the urgency of supplies at Home it may be necessary for New Zealand to bear the sacrifice due to adjustment of the shipping services.
