The reply obtained from Mr Angland was that nothing definite had been decided so far bs he was concerned. Mr H'irdley said that he had been waited on by scores pf people who oxpressedtlie hope that he ' won l .d fetancl, and this he took as a verv freak romnlimcnit. He was unaware before that he had so many friends. They had not waited on him, as a formal domination, but had gone to him individually. It was Itlie hi'ghept lionour that the citizens could confer .on a resident of the town, and as senior councillor , he felt "t his dnty to accede to', the requests n.ndo to him. since it seemed that Wie n °on'p thonsrht he could serve them. He. d'd not however, wish fco deprive n. hotter man of the. position—be had the intprests of the, town too much .at heart for that—-nnd . if a lipttrr m;in would come forward he would willingly stand as'de for him. ; 1 . M r Beck said it depended unnn the is«ue of certain private, business whether would be a candidate for chti Mavoralty, but lie could say fairly confidently tb at he would not aTfaw anvone to have a "walk over" for the posi'tion. He had been asked tn* a good ninny peonlg to stand, both for Criun'ullor and Mavqr, and he felt that thinsra were drift, ine so badlv in the that- timsa who coi'lfl, do so on gift (o give a hand to put 'them straight; A very strong has bo°n ed that Mr F. J. Ronton nrVHbe : prevailed npon to sftand for f,be M{ivoraty, but Mr T?r,!leqton has given "no encouragement for the realisation- <& this hope.
