Nosworthy M.P., was to have opened the sale, hut he had telegraphed that he was detained by ni-gent business. The Mayor/ Dr. Hislqp, had' Consented to perform s that duty. ... ~; ■ In his remarks on opening the sale Dr. Hislop said there were not many countries as well off as -New Zealand. The people here did. not realise howmuch tihey had to be. thankful for. Several neutral countries as well as belligerent countries were /suffering from shortness of 'food,- whereas in New Zealand there was food in plenty and they were enjoying themselves. It was then their duty to be constantly giving. In that district the ladies especially had assisted in providing comforts for our soldiers and sailors, for the wounded,, and for our Allies; they had realised those great duties, and had- also gone on with local work for the/churches and so on. He hoped they would give liberally at this sale, and he was sure they would get the worth., of their money. He wished them 1 success and trusted that the lady who had suggested £l5O would be near the mai-k. He then declared the sale open. 'The Hall looked extremely well. One ond -was arranged as -a refreshment room and the nicely decorated stalls along the sides were laden with attractions. ■' The plain work stall was in charge of Mesdames Grayburn, TJ. Sutherland, P. Davis and Prquting, with members of the senior ladies' guildThe Provision Stall was in charge of Mrs Logan, Mrs Heyder, and Mrs Pierce. The FaneV Stall was presided over by Miss Logan, Misses Sutherland. Pratt, Dean, Sherratt and members of the young ladies' guild. The Flower Stall was oared for by Mrs Cliff,'"Mrs Miller, Mrs Skevingtoh junr., and Miss D, Cliff. The Jumble Stall was attended to by Miss "W. Pay and Miss R. Ineson. The' . Swosts Stall by M'iss Hardwiek, Miss Cliiverton and other members of the Bible Glass; the bran tub by little Misses D. Dyer, Hardwick, Southland V. Dean; the refreshments were in charge df Mesdames N. Shevrat, Dean, Fyfe, Dyer, Sutherland and W-allaoh, Misses Pierce and Shei> ratt; and the Produce by Messrs W. Grayburn, A. Hodgson and J. Eolith stair. ■ The sale was well attended and realised.about £IOO. ' . ';
