SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
TIMARU MAIN. The mouthly meeting of the Main. School committee was held last night-. Present, —Messrs A. Stead, (chairman), A. Wilson'fC. G. Morgan, H.' M. Rob- | c-rtson, C. G. Vogler, J. "Workman, and J. E. Chiles. - The headmaster reported that the Attendance ofboftli schools had been good. On Monday, Maxell 12-th, Mr Gow visited the West school,' and oil I uesda-y. 20th, Mr Hrock (chief inspector) inspected the Main school. On Tuesday, lj#th, Mr Lqngworth and Miss Gore Martin, "-together with Dr. Eleanor Baker, visited the schooTfor the purpose of selecting children in Standards IT and 111., for sr>acial corrective drill: Timitiy-nine girls and' twenty-two boys were selected. In the second class of the same kind held since last year, two boys taken by Mr Donohue and tryent-y-six girls, (taken by Miss ShirtoFffe, excellent results had been attained. In only 4th and sth standard cases wns it necessary <to continue the treatment. Advantage was taken of"Mr L-ongworth's .visit to the district ito giro the pupil teachers some training in the present drill system. He kindly gave them a short course of six or seven lessons. The Main school again won the - championship shield for swimming, and also tSe gold medal for girls' championship of the district, and the silver medal for second place in 'the boys' championship.; Five boys gained proficiency certificates for life saving, and twenty-five boys , and ten girls gained .-certificates •of proficiency for swiniraing distances of 100 yds. to a mile and a-half. One hundred'and seven pupils learned (to swim this season. With regard to Easter he would recommend that the school close on Good ■ Friday and Easter Monday and Tuesday. The report was adopted, vote of congratulation was . passed .to the headmaist-er and his staff on the success attained by the pupils in the recent swimming competitions. ' I'D was decided that -tlio school close •for the faster holidays as recommended by the headmaster. It was decided to draw the Board's attention 'to the rustod spouting in the quadrangle, and also ito the question of installing an automatic flushing tank in the boys' urinals. V " ' The next meeting of the committee will be he-Id on Wednesday, April 10th. Messrs Chiles and Workman were appointed to visit the school in 'the meantime. . The chairman said that the attendance a!t bot-li. the schools was very satisfactory. The roll number at the West school was now 135. and the average daily attendance 123; at the Main school. Ithe roll number was now 894, and the daily average attendance 771. The chairman also stalted that the eoimnittce appreciated the action of the Tima.ru P-orouall Council in erecting "Drive Slowly" sign boards at each end of the school block.
