MILL COOKS.
To the Editor of the ."Timaro Herald" sS'Sss? Jias no made use of. I have been mill cook, and shearers' cook for Tears I worked amid ineve/do ™ n^lo^' , and .no one need g a raillhas only> afkta afteratlons bun, and if they are reasonable and are refused, well, hook it i cook «JTi lOng 1 out of but there are and cookoos," and some w n a r + r ould cooked": ions: as the wheels were movinathose owners are few who nn+^ P fi + a i "i waKe and picked rjL. f who said, "Oh, well, I'm a. » 5 °°^ d for U '° Plonghmen or something equivalent, and tli9+ o°, i lm ' J 1 ? the Tim:jr " mills a " e „ known t0 O.K.—good mill, r ood g all ey, guaranty of cook (or not no gangs) they can -ahvavs get men, whereas almost the first thine n, toiler wants to know is Who's cook? Now, as to the hours of a cook, are thpv much better anywhere, and should the mill work after 8 p.m., or commence before ? a -m- his duty is to report to the inspector. I have seen the time when, breakfast has been at four o'clock and tea at eleven, and wages £2 10s, and others getting £2, and now the 'cooks are getting £4, and the "cookoos" anything they look for from a filthy galley all season to a few Adits witii the men over and above their screw. I quite agree with Mr O'Reilly as to inspection, for some galleys are not fit tor habitation, but I have been lucky to always strike a roomy galley with only one 'bunk in. As regards the rub re the union, let me say I will always give my subscription, and that were it not for the union the cook would still have his 3 a.m. till anytime after 9 p.m., and now he has somewhere to carry his grievance. Let Mr O'Reilly write to Mr Grayndler (if he has a ticket), and report the accommodation; it is his duty to do so. Though I sympathise with Mr O'Reilly I think lie ■went the wrong way about .settling his grievance, or else he has put his case very poorly.—l am, etc., MILL COOK (2).
