CAROLINE BAY.

To thejEditbr >of the "TimaruHerald." Sir,-—The "assertions made by Councillor Wallace that the Bay pavilion is a white elephant, are to some extent 1 correct, hut it is hardly fair to lay all the blame for this at Mr Cray's door. The fact remains, however, that the pavilion ■ as it stands is of very little use, and Timaru can hardly he expected to allow a £I2OO building to stand on the off-chance of its being required on one or two days in the year for outside picnic parties who "happen to get a wet day; I would suggest, thereffore, .that the pavilion be converted into a men's dressing shed, and that all the present bathing accommodation be handed over the ladies, as it is nearer the water, and therefore more desirable for ladies. This would remove the pi esent congestion, and also go a long way towards abolishing the present undesirable arrangement whereby ladies and men enter their sheds by doors so close together- Half the pavilion could be used for dressing articles, and the other half, at.a later date,' could be furnished with gymnasiam appliances, for the use of the male patrons of the Bay. Regarding Sunday afternoon bathing, I personally can see no more harm in bathing on Sunday afternoon than on Sunday morning, and if the extra hours mean extra pay for the caretakers, then I would suggest that season tickets be not available for Sunday afternoon, and that a charge of say 3d or 6d be made for each patron. This will soon prove whether there is a demand for the extra hours, and if the

demand is there—and I believe it is—the arrangement should be allowed to continue. Regarding the piazza, I myself, can see nothing beautiful about the structure, but others may, and I would suggest that in considering-any future improvements on the Bay; the Council and Association should keep as close to nature as possible.—l am, etc., BATHER.
