WAR STORIES IN BRIEF. (Australian, and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, Sept. 26. Naik Shahamad Khan, of tho Punjabis, has been a.wardcd the Victoria Cross. Ho took charge of-a maehino gun covering a gap in our lines, within 150 yards of the enemy's entrenchments, and beat off three counter-attacks. He worked tho gun single-handed after all the men , except two belt-fillers had become casualties. ' Shahamad he'd the gap for three hours, until it had been made, secure. When the gun was knocked out ho and the two bolt-fillers held the ground with rifles. Later they brought hack tho gun and ammunition and a severely wounded' man. Finally ' Shahamad returned alone and removed the remaining arms and equipment. His great gallantry and determination saved pur line. Thirty-six Distinguished Service Orders include ton for Australians. Military Crossecs have been awarded to 251 soldiersj of 'whom . 192 aro British, 49 Australians, 6 Canadians, and "4 South Africans. '
