THE CALL TO ENROL.
To the Editor of the "Tiinaru Herald." Sir,—Through the columns of your valuable paper I pen thes9 few lines to try and infuse tne martial spirit of our forefathers'into the young men of Timaru. Tlie Motherland is at present calking on her sons oversea to arm ■and assist her in her great need. Honour and glory to the New Zealanders who- have at a moment's notice gone to the front. The -New Zealaud Government is now calling for men to assist the Empire. How is the call met? Not by en.listing. Let any one go down our streets. What do they see? A lot of cigarette smoking men standing at street corners passing remarks on people, especially women, as they iiass. That is what I call ''showing the white feather," and who should be treated in the same manner asi the ladies, did at Home, by printing the white feather on their backs. These young men should bow their heads ' with shame when they see men older than themselves who have the Empire's welfare at heart and are offering their services. 1 would call' on all young men to arm and train at once and assist the Empire in some way, and above all not to forget Nelson's order at Trafalgar - "England expects that every man this day will do his duty." Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc., IMPERIALIST,
