A railway manager explains the amazing speed with which the railways handled the military traffic on the outbreak of the war. Three hundred and fifty trains of thirty vehicles each arrived at Southampton within forty-eight hours. The military organisation lor railway control were completed only a few days before. A petty officer on leaving the' Niger noticed that the ensign was still floating at the stern. He said " Hold on, mates," and sorambled aboard 1 the sinking ship, hauled down the flag and rolled it round his neck, saying " Good, bye, old Niger," and jumped into the waiting boat just in time! THE EMDEN'S SLIMNESS. An eye-witness of the sinking of the Jemschug asserts that'the Emden was approaching Penang under false colours, and replied to the 'Russian cruiser's challenge with signals "Yarmouth. Coming to anchorage." Before the officer on watch could reply, the Emdeh swung stem on 'to the Jemschug, fired a torpedo, and poured a broadside. Scarcely a single man ' survived the sinking of the Jemschug. GERMANS IN AFRICA. ILL-TREAT NATIVES. ! PARIS, Nor. 14. An officer of the expedition to Edea states that the Germans forcibly enlist carriers and pitilessly massacre refugees, Eleven natives of the village of Japowa, men, women and children, were disembowelled during the. fighting.
