NOTES ON THE EVENTS. (From Oca Special Cobeesfondeni.) CHMSTCHUKCH, Nor. 15. ; j Tiie Canterbury Jockey Ciub's | Metropolitan, meet-.ng was "concluded yesterday in beautilul weather. There was a keen, easterly wind blowing in the early part of the afternooii, but it changed to a warm nor'-wester before the day's racing was over. His Excellency the Governor was present, for the first tinie during t'he week. There was a capital attendance for the last day of the meeting, and with good fields and high class racing the meeting must be regarded as a briLL'ant success. The totaisator turnover yes. terday was the largest of the week, the figures being £47,906. as compared wit'h £44,338 10s on the fourth day last year, while for the meeting the total was £162,825 10s, as compared with £158,431. There were three scratc&ings for the Port Cooper Hurdle race, leaving a fi.e.d or nine. Beacon was favourite, with K:lmeny and Idealism next best supported. The last named was makhis first appearance at the meeting. Tlie race was somewhat spoilt by an accident, .which brought down three of the competitors at the second hurdle. Oorrie 'and Otatara showed the way over the first fence, hut the former then dropped back. The Pole raced up to Otatara. Passing the stand this latter pair fell at the second ..fence, at which Beacon also te.l. The accident lc&ked rather ugly but Stan Reid and Traill, who rode Otatara and Beacon respectively, were able to~ walk in, and Patterson, rider of Ihe Pole, escaped with a. severe shaking. After the mishab Kmgsway went on in front, but turning for the straight, Corrie and Daylight Bill closed up, and in a run home Corrie won with the greatest eft' ease from Daylight Bill, while Kilmeny, who made up a lot of ground in the straight was only three lengths off. The last named suffered a great deal in the early stages through having to be pulled up to avoid the fallen horses Corrie s form has been exceedingly cons stent, and she has done remarkably . well since she was put to hurdling a few months ago-. Seventeen went to the post" for the Cressy Yvelter Handicap, for which Aident .was very solidlv supported i next m demand being Pavlova and Bertr'ada. Reval and Hov were prominent at the start, but" below the distance Pavlova, Lady Alicia, Bertrada and Meltchikoff moved up, arid in a. capital finish Pavlova won bv half a length from Ladv Alicia. Reval was another half length back third, while Ardent finished fast and was close behind Reval. The latter, as usual, be-' gan very well and Lady Alicia, who also' showed a good turn of speed W Soocl price for second p-ace. Hoy is undoubtedly speedy over short courses, but at present'does not seem to stav too well. a bfe Baucfea ;P. brought out «j I twenty, the race beino- £ Sf apprentices. St. Elmn and \Y haxfmger made most of the early running. with Miraculous and Silver Shield prominent of the .others; Wharfinger was in front when the straight wa« reached but Sti.Elmn finished verv del .terminedly and von with ;som.-tl,ing in hand by half a length, Silver Shield who was about a length away third' seenjed to have a. winning chance wbeii they were fairly in line for hpme, but railed t 0 see the journev out: iFindhorn who was favourite, n-as badly left, but put m a great run in the straight and blushed fourth. On that .showing it seemed as if he must have won with a decent start. Fire Gocl broke a ' Wood vessel when he was running prominent-

The Members' Handicap brought out a very good field 0 f fourteen the onlv scratching being First Flight, who was engaged m the Stead Gold Cup later on m the day. Autumnus Sauci. 'and Chortle received most support. Postillion and Chudic were showing in front when the field settled down,'with Sauci and Chortle prominent in the next bunch. Chudic was done with at the end of half a mil© and Postillion took up the running. A little further on he was beaten by Sauci, who appeared to be winning, when Autumnns came with a great run in the middle- of the course and wearing Sauci down, won bv nearly half a length. Bee, who made up a lot of ground over the final stages, secured third place and showed nlenty of dash at the finish, then enme Chortle, Oilier, nnd Under his weight of 9st S'b the winner's performance in running the seven fnrlones in lmin -2Q 2-ssec° shows him to be very high-class. Eleven two-year-outs went out for the Pioneer Handicap, 'for which Sweet Corn, Desert txold. Adjutant and Spangle were much better backed tiian any 0 f the others- Desert Gold and Sweet Coun were' quickest to begin, while-Bonny Dream was badly left, and .'Adjutant also lost some lengths. With half the journey gone Adjutant commenced to overhaul the leaders. Sweet Corn was beaten at the' distance, but Desert Gold kept her j-.lacc in front and won nicely by-a length. The winner had raced consistently but unluckily earlier in the meeting. Sweet Corn is evidently speedy but does not stay well.

-The Stead Memorial Gold Crip was looked forward to with exceptional in.' terest, as it brought u,bout another meeting between .Reputation, Balboa and First Flight, while Indigo and "Warstep, who had dcaded-heated in the New Zealand Cup.... were also included in the field. Merry Roe was first to show in front, but Fabrifcoff soon took up .the running and was responsible for a solid pace. Warstep moved up before they reached the straight, with Reputation and First Flight in hot pursuit. Reputation was in front at the distance hut he had to he ridden hard to stall off a very determined challenge front First Flight, who was only a neck away at the finish. The rest of the. field-.'-were some lengths off, Warsten heing third, with Balboa fenv+.h. Indigo fiffclj-and Merry.Roe sixth. Bonny Helen pushed, last,_ and shaped very disappotfnffngly. This was the fourth ocorsiqnl on which Reputation n.nd Fjrst met, and it was the third victorv registered hy Mr Bidwi'U's colt over his rival. After the race Deeley. rider /& R"lh/>a, complain™! " of interference by O'Shen'. rider of Warstep, and after 'inquiry the stewards -suspended O'Shea for three months.

In view of ,his vVel-cpme Stakes form : Battle Eve was naturally made favourite for the Mectnc Plate. The 'race was to a- certain extent spoilt, for J)aytime, Blue tle Eve appeared to collide at the start and their, chances were practically hopeless. Chakwaria. Bimeter and Downham were in front all the way. Bimeter stopped inside the distance ,an;d Downham beat him for second place, but though he finished fast he could hot reach Chakwana, who lasted long . enough to win by a length and a halt'. Battle Eve_was running on well at the end and finished fourth.

, The Fendalton Handicap, with which the meeting closed, was. a very interesting race: ? Golden King, .who was one of the first to show out, lod into the straight- but there Sea\Pink and Kooya came through, and Sea Pink won a capital race by three parts of a length. ■ Golden King was a length away third, with Moutoa Girl and John Barleycorn -next. Slogan who was second favourite-, dropped right out in the final stages..
