Anstey at Morven. SPETCH BY MR HEKRIES. THE GOVERNMENT HAVE DONE' WELL. AUCKLAND, Nov. 13. The Hon. W. H. Herries; Minister for Railways, addressed a large meeting oi his constituents at Te Aroha. to-night, and was accorded a most cordial reception. He declared tliat whatever was the Opposition opinion of the Government's finance, the opinion of the bankers and London financers was clea.rly and nnmistakeably in its favour. I'he Government's record was the more creditable in view of the fact that it lias encountered such difficulties as the small-pox epidemic, the strike and the war. . Recent events had shown the need for a local, navy. "When the war was over there would be a conference in London between the Mother Country and the Dominions, and the whole matter of Imperial Defence would bo dealt with. The Government had kept practically all its pledges, and fiscal reform would have been achieved if the war had not occurred. A3 against the higher cost of living, however, wages had been increased in practically every department. The' Massey party was consistent and Homogeoous, the. Opposition party inconsistent and heterogenous, and if it got into power woulld be' wagged by its tails—the Social Democrats. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried midst cheers. NEW CANDIDATES. 'AUCKLAND, Nov. 13. Mr J. J. Sullivan is announced as the Opposition .candidate for Pamell. He was until recently an officer in the Lands and Deeds Department. . DTTNEDIN, Nov. 13. The Liberals of Chalmers have selected Mr \V. D. Mason, of Middiemarch as their candidate.
