On the vote of £3.030.000 for working railways, replying to quest'ons, Mr Massey sa'd he hoped to remedy the shortage of rolling stock b.fure next season. The places of tho men who had gone with the Expeditionary Force were being filled by casuals. The motor train which had he?n tested was not strong enough, but another was on 'order. The reasons for the reduction ill profits were attributable to increases in salaries tote. King nearly £IOO,OOO. and the industrial troubles. It was not anticipated that a- reduction in freights could be given. Talcing the average there were more men employed th 3 year than last. The vote was passed. OTHER VOTES. The Native Department . vote £23.727 ; State Coal Mines. £268.810, j Scenery Preservation, £11.163 ; Public . Trustees' Account. £38,012 : Govern- ] ment Life Insurance Department. £72,869 ; Accident Insurance £7885 , were passed.
