NOTED ENGLISH GENERAL. KILLED BY A SHELL. LONDON, Sept. 16. Brigadier-General N. Findlay, one of the best British artillery officers, was killed in the battle at Torey, northwards of Chatteau Thierry, a shell blowing him to pieces just as the British guns were getting the upper hand. BR.AVE FRENCHWOMAN. AS ACTING-MAYOR. "When the Germans approached Soigsons the military authorities ordered the civil officials" to leave. In their absence the Germans began pillaging the houses. Madame Machered, presenting herself to the commanding officer said : '' You may consider me the Mayor of Soissons. Ask me for anything you want/' The piilaging then ceased. SOLDIERS FEEDING PEASANTS. The British Tommies are providing innumerable refugees with bully beef and English tea. He is so well fed that he can afford to keep a large portion of the countryside alive out of his rations v.-iihout going hungry. A SPRINT RUN. BORDEAUX, Sept, 16. Goorges Andre, a famous sprint runner and international footballer, has been promoted a sergeant for gallantry. The Germans surrounded his company at a village in Lorraine. Andre sabred many, captured a standard, and regained the French lines with a wonderful sprint and under a hail of bullets. REPAIRING DAMAGES. PARIS, Sept, 16.
