The steamer Isle of Hastings reports that on August 4th the Goeben was flying the Russian flag when she appeared at Phillipvillo. She then hoisted the German flag and fired at the shore, with the object of exploiding a magazine. Many shots passed oyer the Isle of Hastings, then lying in port, and the crew had narrow escapes. The magazine shed was destroyed. Thirteen Zouaves were killed and fifteen, thousand rounds of ammunition were blown

A dozen Dublin Fusiliers in Boulogne state that a hundred of their regiment was marching along a road subjected to a terrific hail of bullets from thousands of Germans ambushed in the fields on both sides. Scores were killed and the escapees hid for six :lays in a barn. They buried their uniforms, dodged the Germans, and reached Boulogne, fit for rejoining their Regiment at the front. Documents found on Austrian generals include an urgent appeal to Germany for help. Frendi refugees arriving at Southampton describe Paris as like London on a Sunday. German accounts state that the impression produced on the Austrians round Lomberg is that the Russians arc simply springing out of the caiih without interruption. A German has been sentenced to six months' in London with hard labour for possessing carrier pigeons without a. permit. Others got two months each for failing to register, and for travelling without a permit. Chinese are wearing flags to indicate that they are not Japanese. Several have been maltreated by mistake.
