The race for the soiling championship of the world between the holder, Barry (England), and the challenger, Paddon (Australia), took place on the Thames to-day. Paddon won the toss and chose the Surrey station. Barry led at the start, and Paddon led by haLf a length at the mile. The men were level at Hammersmith Bridge. Thereafter the race was a procession. Barry won by three lengths in 21 mins. 18 sees. j THE RACE DESCRIBED. Received 8.30 p.m.. Sept. Bth. Barry was faster at the start and soon had threequarters of a length's lead. Paddon, spurting, passed the mile post a few feet ahead—time, 299 seconds. Barry's fine long stroke gradually overhauled Paddon, and the reached Hammersmith Bridge one and a. quarter lengths in front. He caught a crab under the bridge. Paddon again spurted with great risk of a foul. Barry quickly recovered his lead and was two and threequarter lengths ahead at Chiswick Church, and four lengths a" Barnes Bridge. Then sculling Hesure-h he won by two and a half lengths. WHAT THE MEN SAY. AFTER THE RACE. Received 5.5 p.m., Sept. Sth. LONDON, Sept. 7. Paddon states that the boats actuall; touched at Hammersmith, but as h--did not desire to win in such a manner made no claim. Barry declares that hi is quite certain the boats did not touch at Hammersmith, adding that if Paddon was not after a foul why did he make such an effort. IjSarry said the race was the second hardest he had evtT rowed.. Paddon says he was satisfied with his rowing, but the water bothered him. Australians under-rated Barry's power. ißarry's last defence of the title lo.'ic place on July 21, 191.3, when, on the Tii mes, he defeated Harry Pearce, the Australian champion.
