Mr Hubert Wilde, chief officer of tlic Kaipara, in an interview stated that from Capo Frio they avoided the trade routes. They ordered everyone to leave and enly allowed them to take the.r clothes. The individual losses were cons'derab'.e. The Kaipara ? s boats conveying the crew were after, wards scuttled. 'I he Kaiser Wilhelm took an hour and a half and fifty-three; shots to sink the lva.'parii. The prisoners were treated wiili great courtesy and provided with saloon berths. It was evident that the Germans did not relis'h the task. The commander remarked: • *lt is a painful proceeding." The same afternoon the Nyanza was sunk and the crew - taken on board. Next, day the Ka : ser \Yilhe'.m .entered Rio del Oro Bay and was coaled from a collier. A week later she was off Las Pai'mas. When coaling tho crew rushed on deck with pistclr. A petty officer said: ' 'You will bo all right bye and bye. I think it is an English cruiser." Later the Captain, and Lieutenant said:—"Gentlemen, please go cn board i-he Articas at once. A British cruiser is going to fire.' - " Many of tho Iva'scr Wilhelm's crew accompanied the prisoners to the Arucas and threw their arms into the sea. Mr Wilde added: "After the prisoners had been sent to the Arucas. and when H.M.S. Highflyer overhauled the Ka : ser Wii'nelm, the former suddenly tired and tho slip replied. The Arucas stood by till a she!l whizzed over cur heads. The first shot gave us a bit of a shock, but our men acted with great cosiness. I took the Arucas's wheel and gradually moved away. Tho Kaiser Wilhelm had no chance against the li'glitlyer owing to her short range.
