The steamer Sonoma brings n£j w-n that the American gunboat Princeton struck an uncharted rock at the entrance to l?agopago harbour, Samoa. A piece of rock sticking in the hull enabled the vessel to be beached and the crew escaped. Only the funnel and a mast now are above water. DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKE. A tidal wave following an earthquake practically demolished Bencoolen u Sumatra. Seventeen Chinese and four natives were killed and twenty injured, including &even Europeans. A Batavia message states that an immense earthquake destroyed the telegraph cables. The steamer Kintuck is ashore on a coral reef. All the passengers were saved.
