COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS.
Assuming that the list sent us by our Parliamentary correspondent of the men to be appointed to the Legislative Council is, correct, it will be noticed that all the Government's nominees have done good service- some on local bodies, others in Parliament, in. the past, The list includes Dr Collins.. of Wellington, and Mr Samuel, of New Plymouth, who were first appointed to the Council by Sir Joseph Ward, and are now reappointed, without reference to their political colour. In the same way Messrs Paul and Barr, Labour Councillors, were recently reappointed. Among the new Councillors said to have been selected are some men who have long been strong supporters of Mr Massey's parly, including Messrs Aitken, Moore, and Carson, ex-members of the House of Representatives. 'A proportion of the other names are unknown to us, but as the new Councillors are being nominated to allow the Government to get its Bill passed for the reform of the Upper House, it is natural to suppose that they are. all svmpathetic with this plank at anv rate of its policy. Of eight Councillors previously nominated by the present Government only four were members of the Reform Party. If eleven appointments are made now the Council will comprise forty members—two less than it numbered when the Reform Government assumed office.
