ADDRESS IN REPLY.

DEBATE CONCLUDED. THE ADDRESS ADOPTED. (Per Press Association.) "WELLINGTON. July !). The House met at 2.30 i>.iv... and after some formal business the debate o t tho Address-ni-Rep.y was resumed, and concluded. "The speakers were .Mr Parat-a, Dr. Poniare. Messrs Hiudmarsli, Campbeli, 31 (Com bs. "Wilson, F- H. Smith, and L-ec (mover of the Address.). 3lr F. If. Smith (YVaitaki ■ said the Rel Feds were out to break every agreement entered iuto. The Prmie Minister had done all he could to settle the strike, while the utterances of the leader of tho Opposition led the strikers to expect support from his party. Farmers were prepared to see that tlieir produce was not held up on the wharves. He contended that the Government party was not againstlabour, and lie supported the native policy of the Massey Government. Mr Lee jCOnmaru) in reply said the criticism of the Government had been of the feeblest kind. He then proceeded to deal with Sir J. G- Ward's speech and li s proposal of an Imperial Council at the last Imperial-Confer-ence, reading copiously from the official report and ridiculing the valueiestneis of the proposals submitted. Sir J. G. "Ward made a personal explanation, in which ho declared that Mr Leo had misnuoted the official report of the Imperial Conference, so as to convey a wrong impression of the speech delivered by him a-5 that conference.

The motion Adopting a reply to the Governor's Speech was carried, and the House rose at niidnicht.

A WEAK DEBATE. INEFFECTIVE CRITICISM. (FBOM OUE SPECIAL Cohbespondbnt.) "WELLINGTON, July 9. Tlie Address-in-Reply debate collapsed to-night. The best speeches were made by Dr. Pomare and Mr Wilson, of Taumarauui. Altogether the honours of debato have been with the Government, and they liave come seathlees out of the tonflicr. with their majority in the Parliament not reduced by a s.ngle vote. Indeed, the guns of the enemy have been so ineffective that, towards the close of the debate Ministers did not deem it worth while to-reply to any of the speeches made by tno other side. The only Ministers who have spoken in the debate are Messrs Allen and Eraser, and the Minister representing the native nide.
