'Die overflow of a subterranean lake blocked the Simplon tunnel, derailed a train and swept away one hundred yards of railway linos. Several expresses are held up. The wealthier travellers crossed the Simplon Pass in motor cars. SUBMARINES COLLIDE. PARIS, .July 8. Tile submarine Calypso during evolutions at Toulon collided with the submarine Circe. The former sank and two of the crew were drowned. A BOLTING TRAIN. MELBOURNE. July 9A bolting train crashed into a sleeping van which was stationed at a dead end at the Sydenham station, and seriously injured three employees. Press Association—By Tel.—Copyright. BERLIN, July S. When the live wire at Spandall snapped a group of workmen hurried to- the spot. One of them proposed to have electric shocks. Ten joined hands, and one seized an end of tho broken wire, which was in contact with a live wire overhead. All fell, five being killed, and two seriously injured.
ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. July 8. Tlie enlarges against Horace Cramond of embezzling sums amounting to £1435 belonging to Thos. Cook and Son were heard to-day ai the Magistrate's Court. Mr Meyers appeared for accused. The charges wero that between February 15tJi and May 13th accused stole ■sums of £165 65., £350, £3O. £7'.>. £452 Bs, £67 Bs. £250, and £SO. ' It -is alleged that Craniond received the moneys in the course of the firm's business and did not account for t'hem in the usual manner; -also that he drew cheques in the firm's name and cashed them. The butts of the cheque forms wero not lilled in. After the evidence of several witnesses had been taken, accused wa-s committed for trial. Bail was fixet.l at £SOO and two sureties of £250 each.
At Wansanui on "Wednesday, Ja*. McQuinn, cook of the barque Manurewa. was sentenced to two months for assaulting tho chief mate by striking him on tho head wirh a bar of iron. The blow was very severe, cutting to the bone.
