UNEMPLOYED
ON WATHAO RAILWAY. WAIMATE MEN'S COMPLAINT. When it was learned in Waimate that Dunedin unemployed were to be- put on the_ railway extension works, writes the Waimate correspondent, straightway some Waimate workers waited on the Mayor, and complained that their applications for work on the iob had been declined They represented tho unfairness of the Department in refusing work to local men while bi'inging others a hundred miles away from their homes to take up the available jobs. Tlie Mayor telegraphed to the Member for WaHaki, Mr F. H. Smith, asking him to make representations to the Minister for Public Works, in the direction of providing work for Waimate workers His Worship has received from Mr Smith tho following reply:—"Only unemployed in distressed circumstances arc at present engaged."
