A MUSICAL SCHOLARSHIP.

DRESDEN PIANO CO.'S GENEROUS OFFER, It- was reported at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Competitions Society that the Dresden Piano Company had offered to establish a. pianoforte scholarship in connection with the Competitions. The offer was contained in the following letter from Mr R. A- Horne, the Christchurch Manager of the Company : Cliristeluii'di, June 2-itli, 1914. "The Secretary, Competitions Society, Christchurch, — "Dear Sir, —As you are aware, our Company has always taken a, keen interest- in your Society's successful work in fostering and developing the art of mus.c in our community. It is at -once our interest and our pleasure to second your efforts for the attainment/of the highest; standards and ideals in this connection; . Not infrcV quentlv, we conceive,- it happens tli-at ■students gifted with talent are in need of assistance for the effective pursuance of their studies, and therefore wo are pleased to submit for the approval of your society our offer to establish a pianoforte scholarship in connection with your annual Competitions, as follows:

"1. 'The Dresden Piano Company's Scholarship,' entitling the successful competitor in section, 15 years and under IS years, to free tuition for one year. Our Company will disburse the feos of any tutor under whom the selected candidate may elect to place himself or herself.

'• "2. Our Company -will place a teaching studio furnished with a- niano at the disposal of the tutor and the pupil for purposes of instruction five of charge during the currency of the scholarship. We shall be glad to kno\V whether our project meets with the favourable consideration of your society.—Yours faithfully, 11 The Dresden Piano Co., Ltd. •'(R. A. Horne, Manager)." ,

The Committee of the Competitions Society accepted the offer with thanks,

and the following reply was sent:— " Christcliureh, June 26th, 191-1. " Mr-. R. A. Horie, Manager, Dresden Piano Co.,'Christchurch. " Dear Sir, —I am instructed to convey to you the- tlhanks of our Society for your kindness in offering a pianoforte scholarship to be competed for at our next festival, and to state that yc.ur offer will, be accepted with pleasure. Your conditions have been noted, jind classes will be arranged accordingly. "Again thanking you, I remain, yours faithfully, "G. W Jenner, Secretary."
