PROMOTED OFFICERS'"CAREERS
Lieutenant-Colonel Braithwaite, who succeeds Colonel Heard as Chief of the Now Zealand General' Staff and Director of Staff Duties and Military Tram-' ingj is now in his 44th year a and holds the position of General Staff Officer in', the Auckland Military District. He ■' received his first appointment in the;. Royal' Welsh Fusiliers on 23rd May, 1891, and* was promoted lieutenant on 16th .May, 189.4 pud capiain on 19th July, 1899. He served as adjutant, lst; Battalion Royal "Welsh F,«6iliers, in the ' South African war from 17th November, 1899, to sth May; 1900, participating in operations in Natal. He took' part 'in the relief of Ladysmith, in- ! - eluding the action at Colenso, opera-, tions on Tugela Heights (14 th to 27th February, 1900), and action at Pieters Hill. - He was then, appointed to the; Staff, .and as Assistant District Com-' missioner.' His subsequent service included : —Operations in the Transvaal' : in May and June. 1900. Operations j in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, | July to 29th November, 1900, including i actions at Frederickstad (17th to 25th October). Operations in Cape Colony,', north of Orange River, including" , action at Ruidam (slightly wounded). Operations in tbe Transvaal,- 30th Nov-" . ember, 1900, to 31st May, 1902. J He was twice mentioned in Despatches and was awarded the Distin-' guished Service Order with Queen's Medal with 5 clasps and King's Medal I with 2 clasps. After the war he was J appointed Adjutant to the Royal Mili--' tary College, and in May, 1910, was promoted to ■ the rank of major. He is a staff college graduate. On 20th | May, 1-911; •he received the appointment of General Staff Officer to the' j New Zealand Military. Forces. Colonel Chaytor, who succeeds Colonel Collins, is at present officer -commanding the Wellington District. He is-.a son of Mr"J. C Chaytor, of Marshlands, Marlborough, and became identified with the Marlborough Mounted Rifles, being appointed captain in 1892. He served in the South African war from 1900 to 1902,' being in charge of the 3rd New Zealand Contingent from 19th to.26th May, he was severely wounded, and ihtcommand of the 2nd Regiment. Bth New Zealand Contingent; from 19th March, 1902. His war service, as given in the Army List, was as follows:—" 1900-2.—Oper-ations in the Orange Free State, -April and May, 1900. Ooerations in the Transvaal in May, 1900, including action near Johannesburg. Operations m the .Transvaal, east of Pretoria September ,to 29th November, 1800, including action at Rhenoster Kop. Operations in the Transvaal west of Pretoria, September to 29th November 1900. Operations in the Orange River Colony, Augustf and September, 1900. Operations in Cape Colony, March and April, 1900. Operations "in the Transvaal, 30th November, j 1900, to February, 1901* and April to 31st May 1902. Operations in the Orange River Colony, March, 1901. and April, 1902. Operations in Carae Colony, FebruaryMarch, • 1901, and May, 1902."
