HOKITIKA'S MISHAP.
FORESHORE .DENUDATION. (Per Press Association.) HOKI'TIKA, April 30. The position, on the sea lYons continues to cause considerable alarm. The spring tides, now receding, have been remarkably smooth, otherwise the disaster of a fortnight 'ago would have been repeated with, worse results. The* sea j continues to encroach on Revel 1 Street daily, and during the last few tides- considerable erosion took place, the low water mark being upwards of sixty feet closer inshore, and there is very deep water along the sea front. The protective works being carried on by the Public Works Department coinprise driving a, series of piles eight feot apart straight to sea, raid these are bc•inc planked. Very slow progress is made, only about twenty ivies having been driven, ten to fifteen feet deep in the last ten. days. Consider able comment is marte on tbe slow progress, and the mn.r>ncr in which the danger is being grappled with. A bornno-h official srives the op : nion that unless more urcent steps taken to_secure the soa tr< nt, if ro'icf' woptber iiapnens greater cinmage is bound to be caused.
