THE MOTOR BUS SERVICE.

To y the Editor "Timaru Herald." • Sir, —The desultory discussion at the recent Borough Council, meeting as reported by your valuable paper well cause the ratepayers to pause and Wonder at the lack of business methods displayed by their representatives. Applications for the position of working foreman for the'bus service were called for some days before this meeting, and yet- it is deemed a fit and proper occasion to discuss the quest-ion of salary. A keen observer, reading between the lines, might well be excused for wondering if someone was "pulling the wires," for t=ome particular aspirant to the situation. As Councillor Pearson remarked the wording of the advertisement was not calculated to attract the best of men. but perhaps' this is ail the more acceptable to some applicants, especially in view of the fact that Councillor Hurdley has now intimated his intention-of moving that the salary be immediately increased to £o per week. This announcement jn the local paper is surely an unfair inducement to those in the near vicinity, and

should be made in all papers in which the position was advertised. The remarks of Councillor Wallace that the successful applicant woud have a ' 'soft job" at £'i 10s per week tend to show that some at least of the councillors do not realise the strenuous position nor the qualification that this man will require to possess. For instance, who would have a traffic manager job on a tramway system at £4 10s per week, with all the abuse and free advice from the man-in-tlie-street thrown in. I sincerely hope that councillors will' not take my reference t'o "pulling the strings 1 ' too literally (unless indeed the cap fits), but so long as proceedings such as these are allowed to occur so long will they leave themselves open to question.—l am, etc. TRAFFIC.
