WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The County Council met yesterday Present: —Messrs R. H. Rhodes (chairman), Q. Lyall, A. Walker, J. Bitchener, Hart, Garland, Milne, and Winter. CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT. The chairman's statement showed that the operations for the year ended 31st March' had been extensive. The total expend ft lire was £27,147 10s 3d tlie principal items of expenditure be' ing:—Road and bridge works,, £17,834 0s 9d. Hospital Board contribution £1448 9s Bd, Timaru Harbour Board contribution £2779 Is 3d, Land Fund works £777 8s Bd. During the year they expended on small birds destruction £319 Is 2d. The bridges authorised under the loan schedule, viz., five heavy traffic and seventeen light traffic bridges, are now completed. Some expenditure on these was mado during the previous financial year, and the total cost- has been £6716 lis 2d, towards wh'ch the Government contributed £I3OO. the Levels County Council £3OO and the Land Fund £356 14s 2d. The accounts that day for pavment total £1269 4s lOd. and the debit b-S am-p. at bank is £4416 14s 2d. The engineer's report was adopted. COUNCIL'S DECISIONS. It was decided to place a light traffic bridge at Jackson's Crossing 0 f thf. Makikihi on the schedule. The clerk was authorised to offer £2 reward to secure conviction of person or persons damaging signboards. Tenders to be called for Sidey's, Elder s, arid Talbot road works, to be dealt with by Messrs Garland, Bitchen er and Hart on 9th inst. The Deep Creek rid'ng. members to confer with Mr Eathorne; lessee of Gretna Green, and arrange for treeplanting sites: Metalling asked for by G. Gray, Urutane, to be placed on estimates. CORRESPONDENCE. Fire Waimate settlers asked for metalling on road through settlement past Hospital.—Council in communication with Government. Iv. Meyer complained of the Junction Road culvert near T. Tliyne's.— Engineer to report. The Council declined to readjust rent payable to Borough Council for Borough reserve occupied by them. Complaints from E. E. Nicholas and L. P. Fogarty, Hook Swamp, passed on to Drainage Board. Mr YV. Gedd.es was appointed to the Technical Board, vice Mr W. Nish, not able to act. ■ Land offered by E. Richards for deviation of road accepted, and work to be done.* The S.C. Automobile Association thanked tlio County for putting. up sign-posts. Two cases of scarlet fever in Timaru Road, Oxford . Street, and two at Waihao Downs w;ore reported. Mrs Croft, Mills Settlement, to be informed that the Ranger must do his duty. 1 Engineer to furnish estimates for road .formation' asked for by W. G. Rutherford and others. Road repairs wanted by C. M. Anderson, Cave, to be done; work not' to exceed £'6o. TENDERS. " Tenders were, dealt- with as ful'lows: Patterson's Road, Britendon and Patterson, £7BB 4s 9d: R. White £497 17s (accepted). Red cliff cottage erection, B. Betten and Co., £323 19s Gd (accepted.) ' • CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. The Council deferred consideration of a claim by Mr E. C'. Studholme for £IBO for damages to a motor car-, etccaused through running on a bridge in Haka district that was uSder repairs. The car nearly hurdled a 4-inch cross beam. The driver did not know the bridge was closed.
