MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

TIMARTJ MAYOEALTY. . ME GUINNESS ELECTED. BY LARGE MAJOEITY: The municipal election in Tin axu yesterday was carried through with, much keenness, and the weather being fine - the poll was a somewhat heavy one. The town all day presented a. lively ap - pearance, motor cars and cabs driving to and from the various polling booths ■ in the middle of the town, while » similar state of affaire existed on. the outskirts. The booths in the Muni- ; cipal Chamber and the Fira Station building were kept very busy all day, and at the latter booth the voting ' ' averaged something like 68 per hour.Towards the closing hour there was a rush on several of the booths. About eight o'clock a crowd began' to assemble in front of the Council Chambers, in order to learn the re--suits. The Council staff posted thef ' totals on the outer door as the various booth returns were handed in, and these 'were keenly followed. The last result to come to hand was Strathallan ■ street, which was brought in at. 9.4 a p.m. The announcement of the final results, showing that Mr Guinness had been elected by a large majority, was - greeted with much applause. Mr Guinness and Mr An gland then.'; addressed- the assembled crowd" from.-' the balcony of the Chambers.

MAYOR-ELECT'S REMARKS The mayor-elect, ,Mr Guinness, thanked all who had voted for Mm for ; placing him in such an honourable position. He further thanked, his committee for the very generous) and loyal support they had accorded him during the campaign. (A Voice: - "Don't forget the 'Timaru Herald. 5 "V (Laughter.) Mr Guinness also thanked all who had placed the use of their cars at his disposal. He congratulated Mr An gland on the fine British spirits he had shown throughout the election, and remarked on tbe fact that' there had been no personalities brought into the fight. In conclusion, he said that after he had been installed into the honourable office to which he had been elected that day, he would be most happy to meet with any ojf the burgesses, whether his supporters or not, and would be willing to do what be could for them. He again thanked those who had supported Mm. (Applause.)

MR ANGLAND'S BEMABEB. ■ Mr Angland said he wished, in the first place, to thank the electors who;, had been good enough to rote for him. He also thanked his committee, 2nd chairman (Mr J. O'Leaiy), and the ladies for their support. * (A Voice: ' "Thank the '"Timaru Herald. 333 ) (Laughter.) _He thought they would agree with him that he had not got fair play from the papers of thetown. He placed the position in connection with the municipal affaire of the town, he said., before the electors in a> fit and proper manner, as it was his duty to do, hut "the Press of the town were not good enough to publish thatfstatement. That was most unfair to Tifrm and the electors and ratepayers of the town, as they ought to hear eveiy person's side of the question in a contest of the importance of & mayoral election. The other side had woiaij a false balance sheet which was misleading, and vrhich he proved beyond doubt with his figures at the meeting in the Assembly Booms the previous evening. That morning the "Timaru HerahT* were not good enough to publish one inch on the speech lieinade thai; evening. (A Voice: "What about the northern outfall?") (Laughter and applause.) Mr Angland heatedly retorted that that would cost the ratepayers £6OOO that it should no have cost If the interrupter would take his glasses off and come to the Coun- . Chamber he could see vouchers which would prove the statement. (Laughter.) He wished Mr Guinness a very happST year of office and hoped the work would be for the advancement of the town. (Loud applause.) NEW COUNCILLORS RETURN
