It is stated on good authority that a white occulting light will shortly be substituted for the present red one on the lighthouse at Otago Heads. The present light is a continuous one, and an alear weather is visible at a distance of some 18 or 20 miles. The new beacon will not be risible at any greater distance, as that is a matter _ which depends upon elevation, but will be more easiLy picked up in thick and foggyweather. An incandescent mantle is also to be substiuted for the present oil wick, ami this will give a more powerful light and one of greater penetrative power. The new light will l , of course, burn the oil in a vaporised form, and. may be regarded as a distinct improvement from a _ mariner's point of view. With the new light which the Harbour Board proposes to erect oa Hayward Point and the one referred t.> above, captains should experience . comparatively little difficulty in approaching Otago Heads at night.
