TIMARU—THURSDAY, FEB.- 26. (Before Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders for drunkenness were fined 5s or 24 hours 1 imprisonment. Charles Russell, alias Wilson, was charged with being 'found drunk in Stafford Street, and having a previous conviction within six months. He was fined 10s, or 48 hours' imprisonment. For breach of a prohibition order, an offender was convicted and discharged, but ordered, to pay costs 7s. ' NO LIGHTS. Timothy Brosnahan was charged with driving a horse and trap along Latter Street, after dark, without carrying two lights. He did not appear, and Mounted Constable Hayward gave evidence. The Magistrate imposed a fine of 10s, and costs 7s. : DEFENCE CASES. Several Territorials were called fo? failing to render personal service required of them under the Defence Act. Captains Andrews- and Nicnolls and Sergt.-Major Sloan appeared for the Department. John Thomas Ryan said he had been working up in North and was thirty miles from a station. The Magistrate pointed out the necessity of Territorials notifying the Defence office of removals. Sub-Inspector Cruickshank said the Defence Department and the Police had been put to a great amount of trouble 'searching for defendant, and his peoole would give little assistance. The Magistrate adjourned the case until 28th May. Thomas Sullivan pleadjed not-guilty, and said he had been at drill on the day in question, but had arrived late. The Magistrate asked him if he ever arrived'late for dinner. Defence duties were quite as important as civic business. He imposed a fine of 20s and costs. .• William Divan was fined 5s and costs for not attending parades. .Tames Divan, who had been before the Court before was fined 40s and costs. John Husband said he had been busy at harvest, and could not get awav. His attendance was fairly good, and he was ordered to pay costs 7s 6d. the Magistrate advising him to apply for leave on any future occasion.
