TENNIS NOTES.
(By "Sykes.") With the advent of spring comes our favourite game, and already many of us have spent quite a number of pleasant hours on either oun Club courts or else the Bay courts. It was not, however, until last Thursday, that any of the local courts were officially opened. '' This opening is, of course, merely a formal function. The 'Wai-dti Club were favoured with a large number of players on Thursday, and there we<re also a number of visitors. Their courts came in for some very favourable comment—several players 1 stating that they are now playing about as well as possible. The Wesley Club have a fairly large membership for a one-court club, and on the occasion of their opening on Thursday the president, the Hev. Hudson, complimented the Club on last year's success in the Pooss Cup competitions and wished the members a pleasant dav and season. The Te Kara C£ub, the only club playing on grass courts here, had a very large crowd down for their opening, and some very good play was witnessed. The two courts are in fair condition, but -to the player used to asphalt t!he - grass courts are someH what strange to play on.. All the clubs in Timaru are confidently expecting a record season,. both as regards the number and' quality of their players. ' Some uncertainty exists as regards the attitude that some of the clubs will take up in connection with the Ross Cup competitions. This matter has been discussed by several of the clubs, but no definite decision has been arrived at.' The fact that these competitions are handicap events does not meet with the approval of all. However, until the South Canterbury SubAssociation takes the matter up no definite steps can be expected from the clubs.
